One regular-strength tablet can kill a cat. Cats lack the enzyme that lets humans and dogs process this drug, and well-meaning owners giving a painkiller are a leading route to feline poisoning.

Toxic agent: Acetaminophen / paracetamol

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Humans detoxify acetaminophen mainly by glucuronidation. Cats have very little glucuronyl transferase, so the drug is shunted down an oxidative pathway that produces a reactive metabolite. In cats this oxidises haemoglobin into methaemoglobin, which cannot carry oxygen, and damages red cells; in dogs the same metabolite mostly kills liver cells. Two species, one drug, two different emergencies.

How much matters

The species gap here is wider than for anything else on this list:

Catstoxic from about 10 mg/kg — a single 500 mg tablet is roughly ten times a lethal dose for an average cat
Dogsliver injury from about 100 mg/kg, methaemoglobinaemia at higher doses
Common tablet strengths500 mg in the UK, 325 or 500 mg elsewhere
Combination productscold and flu remedies hide acetaminophen alongside decongestants that are toxic in their own right

There is no safe home dose of acetaminophen for a cat. Not a quarter tablet, not a children's suspension.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Cats: 1–4 hours. Dogs: liver signs at 24–72 hours.
Typical course
Treatment typically runs 24–72 hours
  1. 1–4 hours (cats) Brown or muddy gums, laboured breathing, facial and paw swelling, drooling, dark urine
  2. 4–12 hours Weakness, collapse, brown-tinged blood as methaemoglobin rises
  3. 24–72 hours (dogs) Vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice, liver failure

What the vet will do

This one has an antidote, which is why speed pays. N-acetylcysteine restores the glutathione the liver has burned through, and it works best given early. Add oxygen, intravenous fluids, sometimes ascorbic acid, blood transfusion in severe methaemoglobinaemia, and liver support in dogs.

Outlook

Good in cats treated within a few hours. Poor once a cat is deeply cyanotic or a dog is in liver failure.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Cats are the emergency. Dogs are far more tolerant but not safe, and neither should ever receive it without veterinary instruction.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Paracetamol and Tylenol tablets
  • Cold, flu and sinus combination remedies
  • Children's liquid paracetamol
  • Prescription co-codamol and similar combinations
  • Handbags, bedside tables and dropped tablets

The thing people get wrong

It is safe for children, so a small dose must be safe for a cat. The reason it is safe for children is an enzyme cats do not have. Body weight is not the variable that matters here — metabolism is. Human painkillers should never be given to a cat, and paracetamol is the least forgiving of them.

Objawy i co robić: Alkohol

Pets get drunk on a fraction of a human dose, and the danger is not the staggering — it is the drop in blood sugar, body temperature and breathing that follows.

Toxic agent: Ethanol

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Ethanol is absorbed within about half an hour and depresses the central nervous system. In small animals it also suppresses gluconeogenesis, so blood glucose falls, and it causes metabolic acidosis and a loss of thermoregulation. A small dog can move from playful to hypothermic and hypoglycaemic within an hour or two.

How much matters

Ethanol reaches pets from more places than the drinks cupboard:

Beerabout 5% ethanol
Wineabout 12%
Spiritsabout 40%
Raw bread doughferments in the stomach and produces ethanol continuously — see the yeast dough entry
Hand sanitiser60–70% ethanol, and flavourless to a licking dog
Rum-soaked cake, liqueur chocolates, fermenting windfall applesall documented sources

Reported oral lethal doses in dogs are in the region of 5–8 ml/kg of pure ethanol, but hypoglycaemia and hypothermia cause harm well below that, and small dogs and cats have very little margin.

What you will see, and when

Onset
15 to 30 minutes
Typical course
12 to 24 hours
  1. 15–30 minutes Wobbling, disorientation, vomiting, excitement then drowsiness
  2. 1–2 hours Low body temperature, slow breathing, low blood sugar, tremors
  3. 2+ hours Coma, respiratory depression, aspiration risk while unconscious

What the vet will do

Intravenous fluids with dextrose, active warming, oxygen and airway protection. Blood glucose and electrolytes are followed closely. Inducing vomiting is often unsafe because the animal is already sedated and may aspirate.

Outlook

Good with supportive care. The deaths are respiratory depression and aspiration, not the ethanol itself.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both. Cats are smaller and more often affected by liqueur cream and hand sanitiser than by drinks.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Beer, wine, spirits and cocktails left at floor level
  • Hand sanitiser and alcohol wipes
  • Raw bread and pizza dough
  • Rum baba, tiramisu, liqueur chocolates
  • Fermenting fruit under trees, and homebrew

The thing people get wrong

A little beer is a funny party trick and wears off. It wears off in a human liver at human body mass. In a 6 kg dog the same volume is a serious dose, and the dangerous part — falling glucose and temperature — happens after the amusing part.

Onions destroy red blood cells in dogs and cats, and the damage is delayed — a pet can look completely normal for two or three days and then become anaemic.

Toxic agent: N-propyl disulfide and related organosulfur compounds

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

N-propyl disulfide oxidises haemoglobin, which clumps into Heinz bodies. The spleen recognises the damaged cells as defective and removes them, so the animal becomes anaemic days after eating. Cooking does not destroy the compound, and dehydration concentrates it — onion powder is far stronger than the same weight of raw onion.

How much matters

The commonly cited threshold is 0.5% of body weight, which is a smaller amount of onion than it sounds:

5 kg dogroughly 25 g of onion — a few rings
25 kg dogroughly 125 g — about half a medium onion
Onion powderseveral times more potent per gram than raw onion
Cooked, fried, caramelisedno safer than raw

Repeated small amounts accumulate, which is why table scraps and gravy matter more than a single stolen ring. Japanese breeds — Akita, Shiba Inu — carry red cells that are more vulnerable, and cats are more sensitive than dogs across the board.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Vomiting within hours; anaemia at 1–5 days
Typical course
Recovery over one to two weeks as new red cells are made
  1. Hours Vomiting, drooling, abdominal discomfort, mouth irritation
  2. 1–3 days Lethargy, weakness, pale gums, faster breathing
  3. 3–5 days Orange or dark red urine, jaundice, collapse in severe cases

What the vet will do

Decontamination if recent. Then it becomes a haematology case: packed cell volume checked repeatedly over several days, a blood smear examined for Heinz bodies, oxygen support and in severe cases a transfusion. There is no antidote, so the treatment is buying time while the marrow replaces the lost cells.

Outlook

Good in most cases. Serious when a large amount was eaten by a small animal, or when a cat is involved.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Cats are markedly more sensitive than dogs, and cats also groom, so they ingest what lands on their coat. Akitas and Shiba Inus are the breeds to worry about most.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Raw, cooked and fried onion
  • Onion powder in gravy, stock cubes, crisps and baby food
  • Onion rings and battered onion
  • Soups, curries, casseroles and leftovers generally

The thing people get wrong

They seemed fine that evening, so we got away with it. Onion poisoning is defined by its delay. The evening after is exactly when a poisoned animal looks fine — the anaemia is still two to four days away.

Yes, chocolate is genuinely dangerous to dogs and cats, and the type matters more than most owners expect — a small bar of baking chocolate carries more theobromine than a large bar of milk chocolate.

Toxic agent: Theobromine and caffeine (methylxanthines)

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Theobromine and caffeine block adenosine receptors and raise intracellular calcium, which overstimulates the heart and central nervous system. Dogs clear theobromine far more slowly than people do — the half-life is roughly 17 hours — so it accumulates instead of passing through, which is why a dose that would be trivial for a human matters for a dog.

How much matters

Risk tracks milligrams of theobromine per kilogram of body weight, so the same weight of chocolate is a different problem depending on what kind it is:

Cocoa powder~26 mg theobromine per gram
Baking / unsweetened~16 mg/g
Dark (70%+)~5.5 mg/g
Milk chocolate~2 mg/g
White chocolatenegligible theobromine, but the fat and sugar can still cause pancreatitis

Clinically, signs tend to begin around 20 mg/kg, cardiac effects around 40–50 mg/kg, and seizures around 60 mg/kg. Do not use these to decide whether to call — use them to understand why the vet asks for the pet's weight, the type of chocolate and the amount eaten.

What you will see, and when

Onset
6 to 12 hours, occasionally sooner with cocoa powder or espresso-based products
Typical course
Up to 72 hours, because of the slow clearance
  1. First hours Vomiting, diarrhoea, thirst, restlessness, a distended abdomen
  2. 6–12 hours Panting, pacing, tremors, a racing heart, high blood pressure
  3. 12+ hours Arrhythmias, hyperthermia, seizures, collapse

What the vet will do

There is no antidote. A vet may induce vomiting if the ingestion is recent, give repeated doses of activated charcoal because theobromine is reabsorbed from the gut, and support the animal with IV fluids, anti-arrhythmics and anticonvulsants as needed. Monitoring is usually measured in days rather than hours.

Outlook

Good with early treatment. Most deaths involve large amounts of dark or baking chocolate in small dogs, or a delay of many hours before anyone realised.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Cats are more sensitive per kilogram but rarely eat chocolate voluntarily — they lack sweet taste receptors. Most feline cases involve chocolate baked into something fatty.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Baking chocolate and cocoa powder
  • Chocolate cake, brownies and cookies
  • Chocolate-covered raisins, which combine two separate toxins
  • Cocoa mulch in gardens
  • Advent calendars and Easter eggs left within reach

The thing people get wrong

White chocolate is safe. It is close to theobromine-free, so it will not cause methylxanthine poisoning — but it is largely fat and sugar, and a dog that eats a lot of it can still develop pancreatitis. 'Not this poisoning' is not the same as 'safe'.

Garlic causes the same red blood cell damage as onion but at roughly a fifth of the weight, which is why a single clove matters in a small dog and why 'a little garlic for fleas' is bad advice.

Toxic agent: Organosulfur compounds, about five times more concentrated than in onion

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

The same oxidative pathway as onion — haemoglobin is damaged, Heinz bodies form, the spleen clears the affected cells and anaemia follows. Garlic simply carries more of the active compounds per gram, so the amount needed is smaller.

How much matters

Because garlic is eaten in cloves rather than rings, the arithmetic is worth spelling out:

One average cloveroughly 3–7 g
5 kg dogthe 0.5% body-weight guideline lands at about 25 g — but garlic's potency means far less than that can cause damage
Garlic powder and garlic saltthe most concentrated forms, and the easiest to overlook in seasoning
Supplements sold as flea remediesdosed for daily use, which is the accumulating exposure that causes trouble

Repeat exposure is the real risk with garlic, not one stolen clove. Daily garlic given deliberately as a supplement is the classic route to a slowly anaemic dog.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Vomiting within hours; anaemia at 1–5 days
Typical course
One to two weeks for red cell counts to recover
  1. Hours Drooling, nausea, vomiting, strong garlic odour on the breath
  2. 1–3 days Lethargy, pale gums, exercise intolerance
  3. 3–5 days Dark urine, jaundice, rapid breathing

What the vet will do

As for onion: decontamination if recent, then serial packed cell volume checks, a blood smear for Heinz bodies, supportive care and transfusion if the anaemia becomes severe.

Outlook

Good with monitoring. The cases that go badly are usually chronic daily dosing that went unnoticed until the animal was visibly weak.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Cats are more sensitive than dogs. Garlic supplements marketed for pets have no established safe dose in cats.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Fresh cloves, garlic paste and garlic butter
  • Garlic powder and garlic salt in almost any savoury seasoning
  • Herbal flea and immune supplements sold for dogs
  • Hummus, pesto, marinades, naan, garlic bread

The thing people get wrong

Garlic is a natural flea repellent and safe in small daily doses. The dose that repels fleas is not established, the dose that damages red cells is, and daily administration is the exposure pattern most likely to cause anaemia. Licensed flea products exist and do not carry this risk.

Cooked bones are not toxic. They are a physical hazard, and that changes everything about what to do: no activated charcoal, no making them sick, and imaging rather than blood tests.

Toxic agent: None — this is mechanical injury, not poisoning

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Cooking dehydrates bone and changes its structure so it splinters along sharp lines instead of crushing. The fragments can lodge in the mouth or throat, tear the oesophagus, perforate the stomach or intestine, or compact into a mass that obstructs the bowel. Rib and vertebral fragments are the worst for perforation; a mass of bone chips is the classic cause of a hard, painful constipation.

How much matters

Which bone, and cooked or raw, changes the risk:

Cooked poultry bonesthe highest splintering risk — chicken and turkey
Cooked rib and chop bonessharp shards, perforation risk
Cooked weight-bearing boneshard enough to fracture teeth
Raw bonesdo not splinter the same way, but still carry choking, obstruction and bacterial risks
Cooked bone in the binusually with fat and string, which add their own problems

Roasting-tin string and foil are frequently swallowed alongside the bone, and linear foreign bodies are a separate surgical emergency. Mention them.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Immediate for choking; hours to days for obstruction or perforation
Typical course
Depends entirely on whether surgery is needed
  1. Immediately Gagging, pawing at the mouth, drooling, distress — a lodged bone in the mouth or throat
  2. Hours Repeated vomiting, refusing food, restlessness, a hunched posture
  3. 1–3 days Straining to pass stool, blood in stool, fever and abdominal pain suggesting perforation

What the vet will do

Radiographs, since bone is radiodense and shows clearly, sometimes with contrast or ultrasound. Removal by endoscopy where the bone is still in the oesophagus or stomach. Surgery for perforation or obstruction. Where the fragments are moving safely through, a high-fibre diet and monitoring may be all that is needed. Neither charcoal nor induced vomiting has any role — bringing sharp fragments back up the oesophagus makes things worse.

Outlook

Good for uncomplicated cases. Serious once there is a perforation and abdominal contamination.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both, dogs far more often. Cats more often have a bone lodged in the mouth than an obstruction.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Leftover roast chicken and turkey carcasses
  • Rib and chop bones after a barbecue
  • Kitchen bins and food waste caddies
  • Street bins and barbecue sites on walks

The thing people get wrong

Dogs have eaten bones for thousands of years. They have eaten raw bones. Cooking is the variable: it dries the bone out so it splinters into sharp shards rather than crumbling. The tradition argument is about a different food.

Most wild mushrooms cause a bad stomach. A few destroy the liver, and the deadly ones follow a specific and cruel pattern: violent illness, a full day of apparent recovery, then liver failure.

Toxic agent: Depends entirely on species — amatoxins, muscarine, ibotenic acid, hydrazines

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

There is no single mechanism because there is no single mushroom. Amatoxins from Amanita phalloides — the death cap — inhibit RNA polymerase II, so cells cannot make protein, and the liver dies. Muscarine overstimulates the parasympathetic system. Ibotenic acid and muscimol act on the brain. Gyromitrin causes seizures and haemolysis. Correct identification changes everything, and most cases arrive without it.

How much matters

What to do about identification, since species is the whole question:

Photograph the mushroomin place, including the base and any ring or sac
Collect a samplein paper, never plastic, and refrigerate it
Note where it grewunder oak or birch, on a lawn, on dead wood — mycologists identify partly by habitat
The delayed patternvomiting, then a well day, then jaundice — treat that as amatoxin poisoning until disproved

Do not wait for the second phase to confirm the diagnosis. The false recovery at 24 hours is exactly when treatment still works and exactly when owners stand down.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Under 6 hours usually means a less dangerous species. Over 6 hours raises the possibility of amatoxins.
Typical course
Days; liver monitoring for a week for suspected amatoxin cases
  1. 0–6 hours Vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, abdominal pain — the common presentation for most species
  2. 6–24 hours With amatoxins: severe gastrointestinal signs, then an apparent recovery
  3. 24–72 hours Jaundice, bleeding, low blood sugar, liver and kidney failure

What the vet will do

Decontamination and repeated activated charcoal, because amatoxins recirculate through the liver and gut. Intravenous fluids, glucose, liver protectants, plasma and vitamin K for clotting failure. Silibinin and N-acetylcysteine are used for suspected amatoxin poisoning. Constant monitoring of liver values.

Outlook

Good for the common gastrointestinal species. Poor for confirmed amatoxin poisoning, and the outcome depends heavily on how early treatment started.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both, dogs much more often — dogs eat mushrooms on walks, cats rarely do.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Lawns and parks after autumn rain
  • Woodland, especially under oak and birch
  • Compost heaps and bark mulch
  • Garden beds where mushrooms appear overnight

The thing people get wrong

It has stopped vomiting and seems back to normal, so we are through it. For the mushrooms that actually kill, that is the textbook middle phase. The liver injury is already underway and is invisible without blood work. A well-looking dog at 24 hours after eating an unidentified mushroom still needs bloods.

Ibuprofen strips the stomach of its own protection and then attacks the kidneys. Dogs are far more sensitive than people, and the margin between a human dose and a bleeding ulcer is narrow.

Toxic agent: Ibuprofen, a non-selective NSAID

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Ibuprofen blocks both COX-1 and COX-2. COX-2 inhibition is the pain relief; COX-1 inhibition removes the prostaglandins that maintain the stomach's mucus layer and the blood flow through the kidneys. So the same molecule causes the ulcer and the renal injury, and in dogs the drug persists long enough for both.

How much matters

Three thresholds, each opening a new problem:

From about 50–100 mg/kggastrointestinal ulceration
From about 175 mg/kgacute kidney injury
From about 400 mg/kgseizures and central nervous system signs
One 200 mg tablet in a 5 kg dog40 mg/kg — already at the edge of the first threshold

Cats are roughly twice as sensitive as dogs. There is no situation in which a household ibuprofen tablet is the right analgesic for either species.

What you will see, and when

Onset
2 to 6 hours for gastrointestinal signs; kidney values move over 12–48 hours
Typical course
Treatment commonly 48–72 hours, longer if an ulcer has perforated
  1. 2–6 hours Vomiting, sometimes with blood or coffee-ground material, abdominal pain, loss of appetite
  2. 12–24 hours Black tarry stools, pale gums, weakness
  3. 24–48 hours Increased thirst and urination, then falling urine output as the kidneys fail

What the vet will do

Decontamination if recent, then a proton pump inhibitor and a protectant such as sucralfate to give the stomach lining a chance, intravenous fluids to defend the kidneys, and repeated blood work. Intravenous lipid emulsion is sometimes used for large ingestions. There is no antidote.

Outlook

Good for gastrointestinal-only cases treated early. Guarded once the kidneys are involved, poor with a perforated ulcer.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Cats about twice as sensitive as dogs, and cats hide gastrointestinal pain well, so presentation is often later and worse.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Advil, Nurofen, Motrin and supermarket own-brand tablets
  • Liquid ibuprofen for children, which is easy to lick up
  • Combination cold remedies
  • Handbags and gym bags — the most common route is a dropped tablet

The thing people get wrong

It is a mild painkiller, so a small dose will help a limping dog. It is mild in a species with different prostaglandin biology. Veterinary NSAIDs exist, are dosed for dogs and are far safer; giving ibuprofen for a limp regularly turns one problem into three.

Coffee grounds, espresso beans, energy drinks and caffeine tablets are all the same problem, and caffeine hits harder and faster than the theobromine in chocolate.

Toxic agent: Caffeine, a methylxanthine

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Caffeine is the same class of compound as chocolate's theobromine but more potent and more rapidly absorbed. It blocks adenosine receptors, floods the system with catecholamines and drives heart rate and blood pressure up. Unlike chocolate, where the fat slows absorption, a lapped-up energy drink or wet grounds deliver the dose almost immediately.

How much matters

By source, roughly:

Brewed coffee80–100 mg caffeine per cup
Espresso beans, eaten wholeabout 6 mg per bean, and dogs eat handfuls
Energy drink80–300 mg per can, plus sugar and taurine
Caffeine or diet pills100–200 mg per tablet — the most concentrated household source
Clinical thresholdssigns from about 20 mg/kg, severe from about 60 mg/kg, life-threatening around 140 mg/kg

Used coffee grounds in the bin are a common route and still contain plenty of caffeine. So do the paper filters.

What you will see, and when

Onset
30 minutes to 2 hours
Typical course
12 to 48 hours
  1. 30–120 minutes Restlessness, pacing, vomiting, excessive thirst
  2. 2–6 hours Racing heart, tremors, high blood pressure, hyperthermia
  3. 6+ hours Arrhythmias, seizures, muscle breakdown, collapse

What the vet will do

Decontamination, repeated activated charcoal, intravenous fluids, beta blockers for tachycardia and anticonvulsants as needed. Blood pressure and cardiac rhythm are monitored rather than checked once. No antidote.

Outlook

Good with prompt care. Caffeine tablets and diet pills produce the worst cases because the dose per gram is so high.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both, with cats more sensitive per kilogram. Cats are more likely to lap a milky coffee than eat beans.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Coffee grounds, used or fresh, and the compost bin
  • Chocolate-covered espresso beans — caffeine and theobromine together
  • Energy drinks and pre-workout powders
  • Caffeine, diet and stay-awake tablets
  • Tea bags, including used ones

The thing people get wrong

A lick of coffee from a mug is nothing. A lick usually is. The cases that reach a clinic are the bin of used grounds, the box of espresso beans and the dropped caffeine tablets — concentrated sources eaten in quantity, and absorbed fast.

Xylitol is one of the fastest-acting household poisons for dogs. A few pieces of sugar-free gum can put a small dog into a hypoglycaemic crisis within half an hour.

Toxic agent: Xylitol, a sugar alcohol

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

In dogs, xylitol triggers a rapid and massive release of insulin from the pancreas — an effect it does not have in humans. Blood glucose crashes. At higher doses it also causes acute liver necrosis by a mechanism that is still not fully understood, and that liver injury can appear even in dogs whose blood sugar was successfully corrected.

How much matters

Two separate thresholds, two separate problems:

From about 0.1 g/kgHypoglycaemia — the emergency that happens within the hour
From about 0.5 g/kgAcute liver failure, which can develop over 24–72 hours
One piece of sugar-free gumcommonly 0.3–1 g of xylitol, so a 5 kg dog can cross the first threshold on a single piece

The gum figure is the reason this substance is different from most on this list: the dangerous quantity is a normal quantity. Read the label — xylitol is often listed simply as 'sugar alcohol'.

What you will see, and when

Onset
10 to 30 minutes for hypoglycaemia. Liver injury may not show for a day or more.
Typical course
Hypoglycaemia can require 24–48 hours of glucose support; liver monitoring runs for 72 hours
  1. 10–30 minutes Vomiting, then weakness, staggering, tremors
  2. 30–60 minutes Collapse, seizures — this is the hypoglycaemic crisis
  3. 24–72 hours Jaundice, bleeding, lethargy if the liver has been injured

What the vet will do

Blood glucose is checked immediately and corrected with intravenous dextrose, often for a day or more. Activated charcoal binds xylitol poorly, so decontamination matters less here than early glucose support. Liver values are monitored for three days even after the sugar stabilises, and liver protectants may be started.

Outlook

Excellent if glucose is corrected early. Guarded once liver failure is established.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

This is a dog problem. Cats have not been shown to release insulin in response to xylitol, and reported feline cases are rare — but ferrets are affected like dogs.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Sugar-free chewing gum and mints
  • Some peanut butter brands — check every jar before using it for pills
  • Sugar-free baked goods and protein bars
  • Toothpaste, mouthwash and dental gels
  • Some liquid medications and nasal sprays

The thing people get wrong

It is an artificial sweetener, so a bit will just upset their stomach. Xylitol does not act like a sweetener in a dog's body, it acts like an insulin injection. The dose that causes a crisis is smaller than the dose in a couple of pieces of gum.

Two chemicals are sold as mothballs and one is roughly twice as toxic as the other. A single naphthalene ball can poison a small dog; the smell alone will not tell you which you have.

Toxic agent: Naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene — and which one matters

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Naphthalene oxidises haemoglobin, causing methaemoglobinaemia and destruction of red blood cells, and it damages the liver. Paradichlorobenzene is less toxic and mainly causes vomiting and central nervous system depression, though large amounts affect the liver too. Both are also irritating to the gut on the way through.

How much matters

How to work out which you are dealing with:

Naphthalenethe older type, roughly twice as toxic; one ball can be a serious dose for a small dog
Paradichlorobenzenemore common in modern products, less toxic
The float testin a solution of water and a lot of salt, naphthalene tends to float and paradichlorobenzene tends to sink — do this only if you can do it safely and quickly
Betterread the packaging, or bring it in

Also consider what the mothballs were doing: stored clothing and blankets absorb the chemical, so a cat sleeping on a stored blanket has a prolonged low-level exposure rather than a single ingestion.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Within a few hours
Typical course
24 to 72 hours
  1. 1–4 hours Vomiting, a strong chemical smell on the breath, drooling
  2. 4–12 hours Lethargy, wobbling, tremors, pale or brown-tinged gums
  3. 12–72 hours Anaemia, jaundice, dark urine, liver and kidney injury; seizures in severe cases

What the vet will do

Decontamination — but not by inducing vomiting where aspiration is a risk. Activated charcoal, intravenous fluids, oxygen, and for naphthalene methaemoglobinaemia, N-acetylcysteine, ascorbic acid or methylene blue depending on species and severity. Blood counts and liver values monitored.

Outlook

Good for paradichlorobenzene and small naphthalene exposures. Guarded for a naphthalene ingestion in a small animal.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both. Cats are more susceptible to methaemoglobinaemia and more likely to have chronic exposure via stored bedding.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Wardrobes, drawers and stored winter clothing
  • Loft insulation and stored boxes
  • Toilet and urinal deodorant blocks, which are often paradichlorobenzene
  • Some outdoor pest deterrents used against snakes and squirrels

The thing people get wrong

They are just strong-smelling — it will taste awful and they will spit it out. Dogs do swallow them, and cats get exposed through bedding rather than by eating anything. The smell is not a deterrent, and the chemical does not need to be eaten in quantity to matter.

Sources

This is information, not veterinary advice. Toxic doses vary with body weight, age, breed and individual sensitivity, and the figures above explain what a vet is assessing; they never mean an amount is safe. If something has already been eaten, call a vet.

True lilies and daylilies cause acute kidney failure in cats, and the amount required is trivial — chewing one or two leaves, or grooming pollen off a paw, has killed cats.

Toxic agent: Unidentified nephrotoxin in Lilium and Hemerocallis species

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

An unidentified compound in Lilium and Hemerocallis destroys the renal tubular epithelium. Every part of the plant is toxic: petals, leaves, stem, pollen and the water in the vase. The mechanism is specific to cats; dogs eating the same plant get gastrointestinal upset and keep their kidneys.

How much matters

There is no meaningful dose table here, only how small the exposure can be:

Two leaves or one flowerhas caused fatal kidney injury in cats
Pollen groomed off the coatsufficient exposure — the cat does not need to chew the plant
Vase watertoxic on its own
Which liliesLilium (Easter, tiger, Asiatic, Oriental, stargazer) and Hemerocallis (daylily) are the killers

Peace lily, calla lily and lily of the valley are different plants with different problems — the first two cause oral irritation from insoluble oxalates, the third affects the heart. Naming the plant correctly changes the treatment.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Vomiting within 1–3 hours; kidney values rise by 18–72 hours
Typical course
Kidney monitoring for at least 72 hours
  1. 1–3 hours Drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite, hiding
  2. 12–24 hours An apparent recovery — this window is why owners delay, and it is the most dangerous part
  3. 18–72 hours Rising kidney values, then falling urine output and renal failure

What the vet will do

Time is everything. Aggressive intravenous fluid diuresis started within six hours of exposure gives the best outcome; started after 18 hours the prognosis worsens sharply. Decontamination, bathing to remove pollen, and 72 hours of renal monitoring. No antidote exists.

Outlook

Good if fluids begin within six hours. Poor once the cat is anuric.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Cats only for the kidney injury. Dogs that eat true lilies get vomiting and diarrhoea, unpleasant but not nephrotoxic.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Cut flower bouquets, especially gift and sympathy arrangements
  • Easter and Mother's Day displays
  • Garden borders and planted daylilies
  • The water in the vase after the flowers are removed

The thing people get wrong

She only sniffed it and seems fine now. Pollen on the nose becomes pollen in the mouth at the next groom, and the apparent recovery at twelve hours is a documented feature of the poisoning rather than a sign it passed. If a cat has been near a true lily, treat it as an emergency now, not tomorrow.

Objawy i co robić: Naproksen

Naproxen is the NSAID that catches people out. It is toxic to dogs at a fraction of the ibuprofen dose because they cannot clear it — the half-life in a dog is around three days.

Toxic agent: Naproxen, a long-acting NSAID

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

The same COX inhibition as ibuprofen, but the pharmacokinetics are what make it dangerous. Humans clear naproxen in roughly 14 hours; dogs take about 74. The drug recirculates through the liver and gut repeatedly, so a single tablet keeps working on the stomach lining for days.

How much matters

Compare the numbers with ibuprofen and the difference is stark:

From about 5 mg/kggastrointestinal ulceration in dogs
From about 25 mg/kgkidney injury
One 220 mg tablet in a 10 kg dog22 mg/kg — four times the ulcer threshold
Half-life in dogsabout 74 hours, against 14 in humans

This is the entry where the dose that matters is genuinely one tablet. Naproxen ingestion in a dog is an emergency at quantities that sound trivial.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Hours, but signs can appear days later because of the persistence
Typical course
Monitoring and gastroprotection for up to a week
  1. Hours Vomiting, drooling, abdominal pain
  2. 1–3 days Melaena — black tarry stools — anaemia, weakness
  3. 3–7 days Kidney injury, and ulcers that continue to develop as the drug recirculates

What the vet will do

Aggressive decontamination including repeated activated charcoal, because enterohepatic recirculation means charcoal keeps having something to bind. Then prolonged proton pump inhibitor and sucralfate therapy, fluids, and blood work over several days rather than one.

Outlook

Good with early and sustained treatment. The cases that go badly are the ones treated as a single-day problem.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Dogs are the usual patient and the poor clearance is a canine trait. Cats are also highly susceptible.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Aleve, Naprosyn, Feminax Ultra
  • Prescription naproxen for arthritis and back pain, often in large bottles
  • Bedside tables and pill organisers

The thing people get wrong

It is the same class as ibuprofen, so the same amount is roughly the same risk. Same class, different clearance. A dog needs about a tenth of the ibuprofen dose of naproxen to ulcerate, and the drug is still active three days later. Treat any naproxen ingestion as more serious than the equivalent ibuprofen.

OleanderNiebezpiecznyOleander jest wyjątkowo toksyczny dla kotów.
Objawy i co robić: Oleander

Oleander attacks the heart directly. It works like an overdose of the heart drug digoxin, and a single leaf can be enough — including a dried leaf in garden waste or smoke from burning clippings.

Toxic agent: Oleandrin and other cardiac glycosides

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Cardiac glycosides inhibit the sodium-potassium pump in heart muscle. Intracellular calcium rises, contractility increases and the electrical conduction of the heart becomes unstable. Potassium leaks out of cells into the blood, which makes the arrhythmias worse. The result is a heart that beats too slowly, too fast, or chaotically.

How much matters

The whole plant is toxic and remains toxic when dry:

A single leafreported as potentially lethal to a dog or cat
Dried clippingsjust as toxic as fresh — a common exposure in garden waste
Smoke from burning ittoxic to inhale
Water from a vasetoxic
Skewers and sticksusing oleander branches for cooking has poisoned people and animals

High blood potassium is a defining feature and it is what kills. That makes this a case where a vet wants bloods and an ECG immediately, not observation at home.

What you will see, and when

Onset
30 minutes to a few hours
Typical course
24 to 72 hours of cardiac monitoring
  1. 30 min – 2 hours Drooling, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea
  2. 2–6 hours Slow or irregular heartbeat, weakness, cold extremities, collapse
  3. 6+ hours Life-threatening arrhythmias, high blood potassium, cardiac arrest

What the vet will do

Decontamination and activated charcoal, continuous ECG, treatment of high potassium, atropine for a dangerously slow heart, and antiarrhythmics. Digoxin-specific antibody fragments — the human digoxin antidote — can be used and are effective, though cost and availability limit them.

Outlook

Guarded. Better with early presentation and cardiac monitoring; sudden death does occur.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both, plus horses and livestock. Cats are less likely to chew it but are equally susceptible.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Hedges and ornamental shrubs in warm climates
  • Patio pots and conservatory plants
  • Garden waste piles and bonfires
  • Dried flower arrangements

The thing people get wrong

The plant has been cut down, so the danger is gone. Drying does not destroy cardiac glycosides. Clippings in a pile, dried leaves on a lawn and smoke from a bonfire are all documented exposures — cutting it down creates the hazard rather than removing it.

Cats cannot process the phenols in essential oils, and they do not need to drink anything — oil on the coat is absorbed through the skin, and a diffuser puts it on the coat.

Toxic agent: Phenols and terpenes — tea tree, pine, citrus, wintergreen, eucalyptus

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Many essential oil components are metabolised by glucuronidation, the pathway cats are deficient in. Phenols accumulate and damage the liver. Terpenes are absorbed through skin and cause direct irritation and neurological signs. Wintergreen contains methyl salicylate, which is essentially concentrated aspirin. And because oils are lipophilic, skin contact is a real route of exposure, not a minor one.

How much matters

By risk, highest first:

Tea tree (melaleuca)the classic feline poisoning; even a few drops of undiluted oil
Wintergreenmethyl salicylate — salicylate toxicity, and cats handle salicylates poorly
Pine, citrus, peppermint, eucalyptus, cinnamon, clovephenol-rich, all documented problems
Diffusersproduce airborne droplets that settle on fur and are then groomed off
Undiluted oil on skinthe worst route; absorption is efficient

Passive reed diffusers and warmers are lower risk than active nebulising diffusers, but any diffuser in a room a cat cannot leave is a problem. Birds are even more sensitive than cats.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Within 2 to 8 hours for skin or oral exposure
Typical course
24 to 72 hours; longer if the liver is affected
  1. Under 2 hours Drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, coughing if inhaled
  2. 2–8 hours Wobbling, weakness, tremors, low body temperature, depression
  3. 12–72 hours Liver injury, jaundice, and in severe cases respiratory failure

What the vet will do

If it is on the skin, wash thoroughly with mild dish soap and lukewarm water — this genuinely reduces the dose. Do not induce vomiting, because these oils cause chemical pneumonia if aspirated. Then supportive care: fluids, liver protectants, warming, and liver values monitored.

Outlook

Good with prompt decontamination. Worse for concentrated tea tree oil applied deliberately to the skin, which is a common history.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Cats are the primary concern, birds even more so. Dogs are affected but tolerate phenols better.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Active and nebulising diffusers
  • Tea tree oil used deliberately as a flea or skin remedy
  • Cleaning products marketed as natural, with pine or citrus oil
  • Liquid potpourri and simmering pots
  • Chest rubs and muscle balms containing wintergreen or camphor

The thing people get wrong

It is diluted and it is natural, so it is a gentle flea treatment. Tea tree oil applied to cats is one of the better documented poisonings in the feline literature. Natural describes the origin, not the toxicity, and cats lack the enzyme that would make it safe.

Macadamia nuts cause a strange, dramatic and almost always temporary weakness in dogs — hind legs give way, the dog trembles and cannot stand — and nobody knows why.

Toxic agent: Unidentified

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

This is the honest entry on the list: the toxic principle has never been identified. It is not the fat, it is not a mycotoxin as far as anyone can tell, and the effect is specific to dogs. What is well described is the clinical picture, which is consistent enough to be recognisable.

How much matters

Signs have been reported at low doses relative to most nuts:

From about 2 g/kgweakness and tremor reported
10 kg dogroughly 20 g — about eight or nine nuts
Chocolate-coated macadamiastwo toxins at once, and the chocolate is usually the greater problem
Macadamia butter and cookiessame nut, easier to eat a lot of

Unlike most items here, severity does not scale alarmingly with dose — large ingestions mostly produce more pronounced versions of the same self-limiting syndrome. That is reassuring, not permission.

What you will see, and when

Onset
3 to 12 hours
Typical course
Usually resolves within 24–48 hours
  1. 3–12 hours Vomiting, then hind limb weakness — the dog may sit down and be unable to rise
  2. 12–24 hours Tremors, wobbliness, a fever of up to 40 °C, stiffness and apparent pain
  3. 24–48 hours Steady improvement in most dogs

What the vet will do

Largely supportive: decontamination if very recent, fluids, anti-nausea medication, and pain relief chosen carefully. The alarming presentation means the main job is often ruling out the things it resembles — spinal injury, tick paralysis, other toxins — rather than treating the nut.

Outlook

Very good. Deaths are not a documented feature of macadamia ingestion alone; the danger is usually what the nuts were coated in.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Reported only in dogs. Cats have no described syndrome, which is one of the odder features of this toxin.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Whole and roasted macadamias
  • Cookies and biscotti
  • Chocolate-coated nuts
  • Trail mix and baking aisles at Christmas

The thing people get wrong

The dog cannot walk, so something has broken or it is a stroke. Sudden hind limb weakness in a dog with access to macadamias is a recognised toxic picture that usually resolves in a day or two. Tell the vet about the nuts — it can spare the animal an expensive and invasive workup.

An edible is rarely one poisoning. THC is the reason the dog is wobbling, but the brownie it came in may be the reason it needs treatment — and the vet needs to know about both.

Toxic agent: THC, usually alongside chocolate, xylitol or butter

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

THC is highly fat-soluble, crosses the blood-brain barrier easily and acts on CB1 receptors, producing profound sedation and loss of coordination. Dogs have a higher density of these receptors in the cerebellum than humans, which is why they get so much more ataxic. Edibles are dosed for humans by weight, and the carrier — chocolate, butter, sweetener — carries its own risk.

How much matters

The combination is what determines the treatment:

THC alonevery sedating, rarely fatal; oral lethal doses in dogs are extremely high
In chocolateadd methylxanthine toxicity — often the more urgent problem
In a sugar-free gummyadd xylitol, which can be the actual emergency
In cannabutter or a fatty bakeadd pancreatitis risk
Concentrates, wax and oilfar higher THC per gram than flower or a baked good

Say what it was. Legal status varies and vets are treating the animal, not reporting the household — but treatment genuinely differs depending on whether xylitol or chocolate came with it.

What you will see, and when

Onset
30 minutes to 3 hours by mouth
Typical course
12 to 36 hours, occasionally longer with concentrates
  1. 30 min – 3 hours Wobbling, glazed eyes, dilated pupils, jumpiness at sounds, dribbling urine
  2. 3–12 hours Deep sedation, low heart rate, low body temperature, vomiting
  3. 12–36 hours Slow recovery; tremors or seizures in severe cases or with concentrates

What the vet will do

Mostly supportive: fluids, warmth, anti-nausea medication, and quiet monitoring. Inducing vomiting is often unsafe once the animal is sedated. Intravenous lipid emulsion is used for large or concentrate ingestions because THC partitions into fat. Any co-ingested chocolate or xylitol is treated on its own terms.

Outlook

Very good for THC alone. Determined by the carrier when there is one.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both, and dogs far more often. Cats are more likely exposed to smoke or oil than to edibles.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Gummies, brownies, cookies and chocolate bars
  • Cannabutter and infused oils in the fridge
  • Vape cartridges and concentrates
  • Discarded joints and roaches on walks
  • Human medical cannabis and CBD products containing THC

The thing people get wrong

It is natural and it will just sleep it off, so there is no point going in. The THC usually will pass. The chocolate or the xylitol in the same brownie may not, and a deeply sedated animal is at risk of inhaling its own vomit. The visit is about the carrier and the airway.

Sago palm is the houseplant with the worst survival statistics in this whole list. Chewing one or two seeds can destroy a dog's liver, and roughly half the animals that ingest it die even with treatment.

Toxic agent: Cycasin

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Cycasin is metabolised in the gut into methylazoxymethanol, which is directly toxic to liver cells and also damages DNA. Acute liver necrosis follows. Every part of the plant contains it, and the seeds — the round orange ones at the centre — contain the most by a wide margin.

How much matters

Very little plant is needed:

One or two seedsenough to cause fatal liver failure in a dog
Leaves and stemtoxic, less concentrated than the seeds
Reported mortalityaround 50% even with aggressive treatment
Not a true palmCycas revoluta, sold as a cycad, king sago or Japanese sago

This is the entry where waiting to see is least defensible. Liver failure from cycasin is difficult to reverse once established, so treatment starts before signs appear.

What you will see, and when

Onset
15 minutes to 6 hours for vomiting; liver failure at 2–3 days
Typical course
Up to a week of intensive care
  1. 15 min – 6 hours Vomiting, drooling, diarrhoea, often with blood
  2. 12–24 hours Lethargy, thirst, jaundice beginning, bruising
  3. 2–3 days Liver failure, clotting failure, seizures, neurological signs

What the vet will do

Aggressive decontamination and repeated activated charcoal, intravenous fluids, liver protectants such as N-acetylcysteine and SAMe, vitamin K and plasma for clotting failure, anti-nausea medication and glucose support. Liver values are followed for days. No antidote.

Outlook

Poor to guarded — the worst on this list. Early, aggressive treatment before signs develop gives the best chance.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both, dogs far more often, and puppies chewing a pot plant is the classic history.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Houseplants sold as sago palm, cycad or king sago
  • Bonsai cycads
  • Outdoor planting in warm climates
  • Garden centres — often unlabelled as toxic

The thing people get wrong

Only the seeds are poisonous, so a chewed leaf is fine. The seeds are the most concentrated, not the only toxic part. Leaves and stem contain cycasin too, and given the mortality rate this is not a plant to reason your way out of a vet visit over.

Sources

This is information, not veterinary advice. Toxic doses vary with body weight, age, breed and individual sensitivity, and the figures above explain what a vet is assessing; they never mean an amount is safe. If something has already been eaten, call a vet.

Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so it does not wash out — it builds up. A dropped bottle of high-strength D3 capsules can drive a dog's blood calcium high enough to calcify its kidneys.

Toxic agent: Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3)

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Cholecalciferol massively increases calcium absorption from the gut and its release from bone. Blood calcium and phosphorus rise together, and once their product exceeds a threshold, calcium salts precipitate into soft tissue — kidneys, heart, blood vessels and stomach lining. The mineralisation is often permanent, which is what separates this from most poisonings.

How much matters

Human supplement strengths have risen sharply, which has made this worse:

Toxic from about 0.1 mg/kgof cholecalciferol
A 5000 IU capsule0.125 mg — so a 5 kg dog needs only a handful
High-strength dropscan carry 4000 IU per drop
Also found inpsoriasis creams containing calcipotriene, and cholecalciferol rat baits

The long half-life is the problem: treatment is measured in weeks of monitoring, not days, because calcium can climb again after it appears controlled.

What you will see, and when

Onset
12 to 36 hours
Typical course
Two to four weeks of monitoring, sometimes longer
  1. 12–24 hours Vomiting, loss of appetite, marked thirst and urination
  2. 24–72 hours Weakness, constipation, blood in vomit as the stomach lining mineralises
  3. 3+ days Kidney failure, irregular heart rhythm, calcification of soft tissue

What the vet will do

Decontamination early, then intravenous fluids with diuresis, and drugs that lower calcium — steroids, then bisphosphonates or calcitonin in serious cases. Calcium and phosphorus are rechecked for weeks because rebound is common.

Outlook

Guarded. Survivable, but soft tissue mineralisation and reduced kidney function are frequently permanent.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both, and cats are at least as susceptible. Psoriasis cream licked off a human's skin is a recognised feline exposure.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • High-strength human vitamin D capsules and drops
  • Cod liver oil and multivitamins
  • Cholecalciferol-based rodenticides
  • Calcipotriene psoriasis ointment
  • Some fortified pet supplements given on top of a complete diet

The thing people get wrong

It is a vitamin, so an overdose just passes through. That is true of water-soluble vitamins. Vitamin D is fat-soluble and accumulates, and the damage it causes — mineralised kidneys — does not reverse when the level comes down.

Iron tablets are corrosive on the way in and toxic once absorbed, and prenatal vitamins are the classic source — a bottle designed to be taken daily by a pregnant human is a serious ingestion for a dog.

Toxic agent: Elemental iron

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Iron is directly corrosive to the gastrointestinal lining, which causes the early bleeding and vomiting. Absorbed iron then overwhelms the body's binding proteins, and free iron damages the liver, disrupts cellular respiration and causes cardiovascular collapse. Iron is not excreted efficiently, so it has to be chelated out.

How much matters

What counts is elemental iron, not tablet weight — the label states both and they are very different numbers:

Under 20 mg/kg elemental ironusually mild gastrointestinal upset
20–60 mg/kgserious toxicity expected
Over 60 mg/kgpotentially fatal
Ferrous sulphate 325 mg tabletabout 65 mg elemental iron
Prenatal vitaminoften 27–65 mg elemental iron per tablet

Do the elemental arithmetic before panicking or relaxing — a 325 mg tablet is not 325 mg of iron. The vet will ask for the brand and strength.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Within 6 hours, often with a deceptive lull afterwards
Typical course
Several days; liver effects can appear late
  1. 0–6 hours Vomiting, often with blood, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, lethargy
  2. 6–24 hours An apparent recovery that misleads owners into cancelling the appointment
  3. 12–96 hours Shock, liver injury, clotting problems, and later gastrointestinal scarring

What the vet will do

Vomiting may be induced early, but activated charcoal does not bind iron so it is not useful here. Abdominal radiographs can show the tablets, since iron is radiodense. Serum iron is measured, and deferoxamine chelation is used for significant exposures, alongside fluids and gastroprotection.

Outlook

Good if treated in the first phase. The lull is the trap — animals sent home during it can deteriorate badly.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both. Dogs raid bottles more often; cats are more likely to be affected by over-supplementation.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Prenatal and postnatal vitamins
  • Ferrous sulphate and ferrous gluconate tablets
  • Children's chewable multivitamins with iron
  • Some fertilisers and moss killers
  • Oxygen absorber sachets in food packaging

The thing people get wrong

Charcoal was given, so the poison is handled. Activated charcoal binds many toxins and iron is not one of them. Iron needs chelation, and radiographs to see how much is still sitting in the stomach.

Raw dough is the rare poison that keeps making more of itself. The stomach is a warm proving drawer: the dough expands and the yeast brews alcohol, so one mouthful becomes two problems that both get worse with time.

Toxic agent: Live yeast — producing ethanol and carbon dioxide

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Two mechanisms at once, which is what makes this entry unusual. Mechanically, the dough rises in the stomach and can distend it enough to compromise blood supply and, in deep-chested dogs, contribute to a twist. Metabolically, the yeast ferments sugars into ethanol, which is absorbed continuously — so the animal becomes progressively more drunk hours after eating, without consuming anything further.

How much matters

Volume matters more than any milligram figure here:

Any amount in a small dogworth a call, because the dough expands
A whole proving bowla surgical possibility, not just a monitoring case
Pizza dough and bread doughthe usual culprits; sourdough starter too
Baked breadnot this problem — the yeast is dead and the rising is done

Do not induce vomiting at home for dough. A mass of expanding dough coming back up can lodge in the oesophagus, and the ethanol may already have made the animal too sedated to protect its airway.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Distension within 1–2 hours; intoxication builds over 2–6 hours and keeps going
Typical course
12 to 24 hours, longer if the mass has to be removed
  1. 30 min – 2 hours Unproductive retching, a visibly swelling and painful abdomen, restlessness
  2. 2–6 hours Wobbling, disorientation, low body temperature, low blood sugar — the ethanol phase
  3. 6+ hours Collapse, breathing difficulty from pressure on the diaphragm, risk of gastric torsion

What the vet will do

Cold water gastric lavage is used to slow the fermentation and break up the mass. Alongside it: intravenous fluids with dextrose, warming, and radiographs to see the extent of the distension. Surgery if the mass cannot be removed or the stomach has twisted.

Outlook

Good with prompt treatment. The bad outcomes are gastric torsion in large deep-chested dogs and aspiration in sedated animals.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both, dogs far more often — cats rarely eat dough. Deep-chested breeds carry the extra torsion risk.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Bread and pizza dough left to prove on a counter
  • Sourdough starter
  • Frozen dough thawing on a worktop
  • Home brewing airlocks and wort

The thing people get wrong

Make them sick and it is dealt with. This is the one where making them sick is actively dangerous — an expanding dough plug can obstruct the oesophagus, and the ethanol may already have compromised the swallow reflex. Phone first.

Salt poisoning is rarely about food. It is about seawater, homemade play dough, de-icer on paws and dishwasher tablets — and correcting it too quickly is as dangerous as the poisoning.

Toxic agent: Sodium chloride

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Excess sodium pulls water out of cells, including brain cells, which shrink. The brain adapts by generating internal osmolytes to hold water in. That adaptation is why treatment must be slow: if blood sodium is corrected rapidly, water floods back into brain cells and causes cerebral oedema. So the poisoning and its treatment both threaten the brain.

How much matters

Where the dangerous doses actually come from:

From about 2–3 g/kgpotentially lethal
Seawaterthe commonest cause in dogs — drinking it while playing at the beach
Homemade salt dough ornamentsextremely high salt, and shaped like biscuits
Rock salt and de-icerlicked off paws in winter
Dishwasher salt and tabletsalso caustic
Table salt used to induce vomitinga discredited practice that causes poisoning

If someone has advised you to make a dog vomit using salt, do not. It is an outdated method that has caused fatal sodium poisoning, and modern veterinary practice uses safer emetics.

What you will see, and when

Onset
1 to 3 hours
Typical course
Correction is deliberately slow — 24 to 72 hours
  1. 1–3 hours Vomiting, diarrhoea, intense thirst, staggering
  2. 3–12 hours Tremors, disorientation, weakness, high temperature
  3. 12+ hours Seizures, brain swelling, coma

What the vet will do

Blood sodium is measured, and then lowered slowly and deliberately — typically no faster than about 0.5 mmol/L per hour — with carefully chosen intravenous fluids. Free water is offered in small frequent amounts rather than allowing the animal to drink to excess. Neurological status is monitored throughout.

Outlook

Good with controlled correction. The danger is as much from rapid rehydration as from the salt.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both. Dogs at the beach are the classic case; cats more often via de-icer or licking a caustic product.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Seawater and rock pools
  • Homemade salt dough decorations
  • Winter road salt and paw-melt products
  • Dishwasher salt and rinse aid
  • Very salty snacks eaten in quantity — crisps, cured meat, stock cubes

The thing people get wrong

Give them lots of water to flush it out. Letting a salt-poisoned animal drink freely is how you cause brain swelling. Small frequent amounts of water and a vet controlling the correction rate is the safe route — this is one where the intuitive first aid is the wrong move.

There is no such thing as generic rat poison. Four unrelated chemistries are sold in similar-looking blue and green blocks, they poison in completely different ways, and only one of them has an antidote. Find the packet.

Toxic agent: Four different active ingredients with nothing in common

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Anticoagulants block vitamin K recycling, so clotting factors run out and the animal bleeds internally days later. Bromethalin uncouples oxidative phosphorylation in the brain and causes cerebral oedema. Cholecalciferol floods the body with vitamin D, driving calcium so high it calcifies the kidneys. Zinc phosphide releases phosphine gas in the stomach. Same shelf, four different emergencies.

How much matters

What to tell the vet, by active ingredient:

Anticoagulant (brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum)bleeding at 3–5 days; vitamin K1 is an effective antidote, given for weeks
Bromethalinneurological signs in 2–24 hours; no antidote, very narrow margin
Cholecalciferolkidney failure over 1–3 days; no true antidote, hardest to treat
Zinc phosphidevomiting and phosphine gas within hours; ventilate the room, the vomit is hazardous to humans

The single most useful thing you can do is bring the packaging or photograph the active ingredient panel. Colour and pellet shape do not identify the chemistry, and the treatment differs completely.

What you will see, and when

Onset
2 hours to 5 days depending entirely on which one
Typical course
Days for bromethalin and zinc phosphide; up to a month of vitamin K for anticoagulants
  1. Anticoagulant nothing for 3–5 days, then pale gums, coughing, bruising, blood in urine, sudden collapse
  2. Bromethalin tremors, hind limb weakness, seizures, coma over hours to a day
  3. Cholecalciferol vomiting, thirst and excessive urination, then kidney failure over 1–3 days
  4. Zinc phosphide rapid vomiting, bloating, difficulty breathing, garlic or fish odour to the vomit

What the vet will do

Decontamination, then it splits: vitamin K1 with clotting time monitoring for anticoagulants; intravenous lipid emulsion, mannitol and repeated charcoal for bromethalin; fluids, drugs to lower calcium and days of monitoring for cholecalciferol; supportive care and ventilation for zinc phosphide.

Outlook

Anticoagulants: good, if the full course of vitamin K is completed. Bromethalin and cholecalciferol: guarded to poor.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both. Cats are also at risk of relay toxicity from eating a poisoned rodent, particularly with anticoagulants.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Bait blocks and pellets in sheds, garages and lofts
  • Bait boxes placed by a pest controller, sometimes without the resident knowing the ingredient
  • Poisoned rodents in the garden
  • Neighbouring properties — a dog can eat bait it found next door

The thing people get wrong

The vet gave vitamin K, so whatever it was is covered. Vitamin K is the antidote for one of the four families and does nothing for the other three. Identifying the active ingredient is not administrative box-ticking, it decides the entire treatment.

Metaldehyde slug pellets cause continuous seizures within an hour, and they are formulated with bran to smell like food. Of the garden chemicals, this is the one that kills fastest.

Toxic agent: Metaldehyde

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Metaldehyde lowers the seizure threshold in the central nervous system, probably by reducing GABA and serotonin activity. The result is uncontrollable tremors and convulsions that generate enormous heat — animals die of hyperthermia and the muscle breakdown that follows as much as of the seizures themselves.

How much matters

The margin is narrow and the bait is attractive:

From about 100 mg/kgseizures expected in dogs
Typical pellets1.5–5% metaldehyde
Bran carrierdeliberately palatable — pellets are designed to be eaten
Ferric phosphate alternativesmuch safer, and worth switching to if you have pets

The name to look for on the box is metaldehyde. Ferric or iron phosphate baits exist, cause mild gastrointestinal upset at most, and are the sensible choice in a garden a dog uses.

What you will see, and when

Onset
30 minutes to 3 hours
Typical course
12 to 72 hours, often requiring sedation throughout
  1. 30 min – 1 hour Anxiety, drooling, vomiting, muscle twitching
  2. 1–3 hours Continuous tremors, then seizures, rapid breathing, temperature climbing above 41 °C
  3. 3–24 hours Muscle breakdown, kidney injury from myoglobin, liver damage, respiratory failure

What the vet will do

Seizure control is the priority — methocarbamol, benzodiazepines, and general anaesthesia if needed. Active cooling for hyperthermia, gastric lavage under anaesthesia, intravenous lipid emulsion, fluids to protect the kidneys. Animals often need sedation for a day or more. No antidote.

Outlook

Good if seizures are controlled early and hyperthermia is prevented. Poor once temperature and muscle breakdown are established.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both, dogs far more often because the bran carrier appeals to them.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Blue or green pellets scattered on garden beds
  • Open boxes in sheds and greenhouses
  • Allotments and neighbouring gardens
  • Liquid and gel slug killers

The thing people get wrong

Pet-safe is on the box, so it is fine. Pet-safe on slug bait usually means ferric phosphate rather than metaldehyde — but the claim is marketing, not a standard. Read the active ingredient. If it says metaldehyde, it is not pet safe at any dose.

Grapes and raisins cause acute kidney failure in dogs, and uniquely among common poisons there is no dose anyone can call safe — some dogs eat a bunch with no effect, others go into renal failure on a handful.

Toxic agent: Suspected tartaric acid and potassium bitartrate

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

For decades the toxic principle was unknown, which is why the advice was always maximally cautious. Tartaric acid and its salt potassium bitartrate are now the leading candidates, which fits both the grape family and the observation that dogs are unusually sensitive to tartaric acid. The kidney damage is acute tubular necrosis — the filtering tubules die.

How much matters

This is the entry where a dose table would be misleading, so there isn't one. What is documented:

Reported toxic amountsas little as 4–5 grapes in a small dog, and no effect at all in other dogs eating far more
Raisins and sultanasmore concentrated by weight than fresh grapes, so a smaller volume matters
Seedless, organic, peeled, cookedno difference — none of these change the outcome

Because susceptibility appears idiosyncratic, veterinary practice is to treat every ingestion as significant rather than to calculate. That is genuinely different from chocolate, where the maths is meaningful.

What you will see, and when

Onset
Vomiting within 6–12 hours; kidney values rise over 24–72 hours
Typical course
Kidney monitoring for at least 72 hours
  1. 6–12 hours Vomiting, sometimes with grape or raisin fragments visible, then lethargy and loss of appetite
  2. 24 hours Abdominal pain, more vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration
  3. 48–72 hours Falling urine output, then no urine at all — the point at which the outlook turns poor

What the vet will do

Decontamination if the ingestion is recent, then aggressive intravenous fluids to protect the kidneys, with blood urea nitrogen, creatinine and urine output tracked for three days. Dialysis is occasionally used where available. There is no antidote.

Outlook

Good if fluids start before kidney values move. Poor once the dog stops producing urine.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Well documented in dogs. Cats and ferrets are theoretically at risk but cases are scarce, most likely because they do not eat fruit voluntarily rather than because they are protected.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Fresh grapes and sultanas
  • Raisin bread, hot cross buns, fruitcake, mince pies
  • Trail mix and cereal bars
  • Chocolate-covered raisins, which pair this with theobromine
  • Grape juice and wine

The thing people get wrong

My dog ate grapes once and was fine, so grapes are fine for my dog. Sensitivity varies between individuals and, as far as anyone can tell, between exposures. A tolerated dose on Tuesday is not a guarantee for Friday. This is the specific reason the profession does not calculate a threshold for grapes.

Autumn crocus contains colchicine, the same drug used for gout, and it stops cells dividing. That means the damage lands days later on the fastest-dividing tissues: gut lining and bone marrow.

Toxic agent: Colchicine

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Colchicine binds tubulin and arrests mitosis. Tissues that renew constantly suffer first — the intestinal lining sloughs, and the bone marrow stops producing blood cells. That is why the serious phase is delayed by days and why an animal that looked recovered can crash in the second week.

How much matters

Every part of the plant is toxic, and the bulb most of all:

Bulbs (corms)highest colchicine concentration — dogs dig them up in autumn
Leaves and flowerstoxic, and the leaves appear in spring without flowers
Often confused withspring crocus (Crocus species), which causes only mild upset — the two are unrelated plants
Also confused withwild garlic, because the spring leaves look similar

Colchicum autumnale is the plant that matters. If you can bring a leaf or a photograph, do — the identification changes the level of concern completely.

What you will see, and when

Onset
2 to 12 hours for gastrointestinal signs; marrow effects at 3–7 days
Typical course
Up to two weeks of monitoring
  1. 2–12 hours Drooling, vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, abdominal pain
  2. 1–3 days Apparent improvement, dehydration, liver and kidney values rising
  3. 3–7 days Bone marrow suppression — anaemia, low white cells, bleeding; multi-organ failure in severe cases

What the vet will do

Decontamination early, then intensive supportive care: fluids, gastroprotection, and repeated complete blood counts for a week or more to catch the marrow crash. There is no antidote.

Outlook

Guarded. Large ingestions, particularly of bulbs, can be fatal despite treatment.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Both. Dogs are the usual patient because they dig.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Autumn borders and lawns, flowering September to November
  • Bulbs bought for planting, stored in sheds
  • Grazing paddocks — also toxic to horses and livestock
  • Spring meadows, where the leaves come up alone

The thing people get wrong

It is a crocus, and crocuses are harmless. Spring crocus and autumn crocus are different plants from different families. The spring one causes mild stomach upset; the autumn one contains colchicine and can suppress bone marrow. The season it flowers in is the clue.

Antifreeze tastes sweet, a teaspoon can kill a cat, and it has an antidote that only works if it is given within hours. Of everything on this list, this is the one where speed matters most.

Toxic agent: Ethylene glycol

If it has already happened

Phone a vet now, before reading on. Have ready: your pet's weight, roughly how much was eaten and when, and the packaging if there is any.

What it actually does

Ethylene glycol itself is only mildly intoxicating. The liver converts it, via alcohol dehydrogenase, into glycolic acid and then oxalate. The acid causes severe metabolic acidosis; the oxalate binds calcium and forms crystals that block the kidney tubules. The antidote works by occupying the enzyme so the conversion never happens — which is why it is useless once the metabolites have already formed.

How much matters

The lethal quantities are genuinely small:

Catsabout 1.5 ml/kg — roughly a teaspoon for an average cat
Dogsabout 4.4–6.6 ml/kg
Typical coolant50–95% ethylene glycol
Antidote windowcats about 3 hours, dogs about 8 hours; after that the prognosis collapses

Some newer coolants use propylene glycol, which is much less toxic. The bottle tells you which, and taking a photograph of the label on the way to the clinic is genuinely useful.

What you will see, and when

Onset
30 minutes to 12 hours, in three distinct phases
Typical course
Kidney injury declares itself at 12–72 hours
  1. 30 min – 12 hours Appears drunk: wobbling, vomiting, excessive thirst and urination, then apparent recovery
  2. 12–24 hours Fast breathing and heart rate as acidosis builds — the deceptive middle where the animal looks better
  3. 24–72 hours Kidney failure: no urine, vomiting, mouth ulcers, seizures

What the vet will do

The antidote is fomepizole, or ethanol where fomepizole is unavailable. Alongside it: intravenous fluids, bicarbonate for acidosis, and monitoring of kidney values and urine output. Dialysis if the kidneys have already failed and it is available.

Outlook

Good if the antidote is given inside the window. Very poor once the animal is in renal failure — this is a poisoning where hours change the outcome completely.

Dogs and cats are not the same here

Cats need far less and have a shorter antidote window. Cats also walk on garage floors and then groom.

Where it comes from in a normal house

  • Car coolant and radiator fluid, especially spills and drips on a driveway
  • Screen wash and de-icer
  • Brake fluid
  • Some snow globes and ornamental liquids
  • Toilet antifreeze in caravans and holiday homes

The thing people get wrong

They only licked a bit off the floor. A teaspoon is a fatal dose for a cat, and licking a puddle is the classic exposure. Do not wait for symptoms — the treatable window closes before the serious symptoms start.

Things that are never safe for cats

Cats are not small dogs, and the list that matters for them is different. Their size, their liver chemistry and their grooming habit all make small exposures serious.

Lilies — the most dangerous plant in a cat's home

True lilies and daylilies cause acute kidney failure in cats, and every part is toxic: petals, leaves, stem, pollen and the water in the vase. A cat that brushes past a bouquet, gets pollen on its coat and grooms it off has taken a potentially fatal dose without eating anything. There is no known safe exposure and treatment is time-critical, so a lily in the house is worth removing rather than managing.

Lilies

Paracetamol and other human painkillers

Cats lack an enzyme pathway that people rely on to process paracetamol, which makes them extraordinarily sensitive — a single standard tablet can kill an average cat. Ibuprofen and aspirin are dangerous too. Never give a cat human medicine, and never assume that a dose scaled down by weight is safe, because the problem is the pathway rather than the amount.

Acetaminophen · Ibuprofen

Onions, garlic, chives and leeks

Cats are more sensitive to these than dogs are. They destroy red blood cells and cause haemolytic anaemia, the effect builds up over repeated small exposures, and cooking or drying does not help. The usual route is not a raw onion but seasoned human food, baby food, stock and garlic supplements sold for pets.

Onions · Garlic

Dog food, as a diet rather than a mouthful

A stolen mouthful is not an emergency, but a cat fed on dog food will become ill. Cats are obligate carnivores and cannot make enough taurine, arachidonic acid or preformed vitamin A for themselves, and dog food is not formulated to supply them. Sustained taurine deficiency causes dilated cardiomyopathy and irreversible retinal degeneration.

Raw fish as a staple, and tuna-only diets

Some raw fish contains thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1, and a diet built on it causes thiamine deficiency with neurological signs. Tinned tuna meant for people is a separate problem: it is not nutritionally complete, it is high in mercury and unsaturated fat, and cats that hold out for it often start refusing balanced food.

Chocolate, coffee and energy drinks

The theobromine and caffeine problem is the same as in dogs, and per kilogram cats are more sensitive. Cats are less inclined to eat chocolate, so poisonings are rarer, but a 4 kg animal needs a much smaller amount to reach the same dose, and milk-based chocolate drinks are more tempting than a bar.

Chocolate · Coffee

Alcohol and raw yeast dough

Small cats and ethanol are a bad combination, and the quantities involved are trivial — a few laps of a spilled drink, or the liqueur in a dessert. Raw dough keeps fermenting in a warm stomach, producing alcohol and swelling as it goes.

Alcohol · Raw Yeast Dough

Grapes, raisins and xylitol

Both are well documented in dogs and much less studied in cats, largely because cats rarely eat sweet things. There is no evidence of a safe dose in cats either, so both belong on the avoid list: grapes and raisins for the kidney risk, xylitol for the insulin crash.

Foods that are safe for cats in normal amounts

A cat's diet should be built on complete cat food. Everything below is a treat or a functional extra rather than a replacement for it.

Plain cooked meat and poultry

Cooked chicken, turkey and lean beef, unseasoned and off the bone, make the ideal cat treat: high in protein, no carbohydrate, and close to what a cat would actually hunt. Skip the skin and any pan juices, which carry salt, oil and often onion or garlic.

Cooked white fish, and a little oily fish

Cooked cod, haddock, plain salmon and a small amount of sardine in spring water are safe and popular. Serve them cooked and boneless, and keep fish occasional rather than routine, because fish-heavy diets skew the nutrient balance.

Cooked egg

Scrambled without butter or salt, or hard boiled, egg is a well-tolerated source of protein and taurine. Raw egg white is not, because avidin binds biotin, and raw egg carries the usual bacterial risk.

Plain pumpkin and a few vegetables

A teaspoon of plain cooked pumpkin is the standard suggestion for mild constipation or loose stools, and small amounts of cooked carrot, green beans or peas are harmless. Cats do not need vegetables at all, so treat these as a functional extra rather than as nutrition.

Water, which matters more than any treat

The most useful thing you can add to a cat's diet is not a food. Cats have a weak thirst drive, and chronic mild dehydration underlies much of the urinary disease they get. Wet food, a fountain, and several bowls placed away from the food do more for a cat than any snack.

Keep all treats, plain meat included, under about 10% of daily calories: a cat's total energy requirement is small and easily displaced. Introduce anything new in a small amount and wait two or three days before adding another.

How to judge something that is not on this list

Advice written for dogs does not transfer to cats. These five points explain why, and cover most of what people get wrong.

A cat is an obligate carnivore, not a small dog

Cats have absolute dietary requirements — taurine, arachidonic acid, preformed vitamin A, and a higher protein floor — that dogs can work around. That is why vegetarian and vegan diets are unsafe for cats, and why it is fine for the dog is not a useful test.

Dose and body weight decide almost everything

An average cat weighs 4 to 5 kg, a fraction of most dogs, so the same mouthful of a toxic food is a far larger dose. Any figure you find quoted per animal rather than per kilogram was probably written about a dog.

Cats poison themselves by grooming

This is the difference that catches people out. A cat does not have to eat anything: pollen on the coat, a spill walked through, a flea treatment meant for a dog, or a drop of essential oil all get swallowed at the next wash. Contamination of the fur is an ingestion event.

Sudden fussiness is a symptom, not a preference

Cats hide illness well, and a cat that stops eating is in trouble faster than other pets: much beyond 24 hours without food risks hepatic lipidosis, a liver condition that is dangerous in its own right. Do not wait out a hunger strike.

Check the label before you assume it belongs in the house

Many cat poisonings involve things that are not food at all: permethrin flea treatments meant for dogs, essential oils and diffusers, antifreeze, and lily bouquets. If you are unsure, look it up before it comes into the room.

If your cat has eaten something dangerous

Act on the suspicion rather than on symptoms. Cats mask illness, and with lilies and paracetamol the treatable window closes long before a cat looks unwell.

Do this first

  • Take the rest away and shut your cat in one room where you can see them.
  • If the substance is on their coat, stop them grooming. An Elizabethan collar or a loose towel wrap buys time.
  • Work out what, how much and when, and note your cat's weight.
  • Keep the packaging, the label, or the plant itself — identifying it changes the treatment.
  • Call your vet, the out-of-hours service or a poison hotline immediately, and say that it is a cat.

Do not do this

  • Do not induce vomiting. There is no safe way to do it at home in a cat, and the products used in dogs are dangerous here.
  • Do not bathe a contaminated cat in anything except plain warm water with a little mild washing-up liquid, and only if you have been told to.
  • Do not give any human medicine, and paracetamol least of all — it is the most common fatal mistake owners make with cats.
  • Do not offer milk, oil or food to dilute the toxin.
  • Do not wait to see whether your cat becomes unwell.

Signs that mean go now

  • Drooling, foaming, or pawing at the mouth
  • Vomiting or retching, especially repeatedly
  • Hiding, sitting hunched, or a sudden change in temperament
  • Not eating for more than 24 hours, or not drinking
  • Straining in the litter tray, or passing no urine
  • Wobbliness, twitching, tremors or seizures
  • Fast, open-mouthed or laboured breathing — always an emergency in a cat
  • Pale, white, yellow or muddy gums

Frequently asked questions

What foods are most toxic to cats?

Lilies (even the pollen), onions and garlic, chocolate, alcohol, raw yeast dough, grapes and raisins, and anything sweetened with xylitol top the list. Cats are also uniquely sensitive to paracetamol (acetaminophen) and many essential oils.

What should I do if my cat ate something dangerous?

Contact your veterinarian or a pet poison hotline right away — never induce vomiting in a cat without professional guidance. Write down what was eaten, roughly how much, and when it happened.

Can cats eat human food?

Cats are obligate carnivores, so safe extras are mostly small amounts of plain cooked meat or fish. Milk is a common myth — most adult cats are lactose intolerant.

Why can't cats eat foods that are fine for dogs?

Cats lack several liver enzymes that dogs and humans use to break down toxins, so many substances stay in their system far longer. That is why even tiny doses of onion, paracetamol, or essential oils can be dangerous.

Where does this data come from?

Safety ratings are compiled from published veterinary toxicology sources, including the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, Pet Poison Helpline, and the Merck Veterinary Manual, and are reviewed regularly.
